Good Morning,<br />
I've had a few days to reconnoiter since returning from our yearly retreat in Taos. This was definately the best session ever! Each of the three instructors for the retreat, myself included, made a little something for each of the students. These elegant little pincushions were my contribution. I.V. found the glass bases at a surplus store. We think they were probably for using under the feet of furniture. Anyway, we have about 100 of them and will be making many more of these little lovelies.<br />
Each one is made of hand dyed velvet stuffed with wool, inset into the heavy glass base and topped with Lucite flowers and leaves. I'll be making lots more this week to take with us to Quilt Colorado later this month.<br />
Till next time,<br />

Hi All,<br />
Here are some scarves that I made using Habotai silk blanks from Jacquard and their green label silk acid dyes. I used cheap paint brushes and slightly diluted dye. After they batched for 24 hours I set them in Jacquard dye set concentrate. No steaming required.<br />
This is a really fun technique and a great way to dye if you don't want to deal with powdered dyes and extra chemicals.<br />
Till next time,<br />

Hi All,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been a while again. But at least this time I've got a good excuse; a badly torn ligament in a dislocated middle finger on my right hand - what a royal pain! So, I haven't gotten much work done lately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But, here is a quick little, ditty that I did on Sunday while teaching the technique to just one student. It is 5-7 layers of cotton, silk and melty nylon fabrics along with cheesecloth, all stitched up then scored with a soldering tool and heated with a heat. gun. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before you get too impressed, the flowers, leaves and stems were already embroidered on the nylon fabric, but, I used wise placement and stitching to achieve this yummy end result.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till next time,</div>

Hi All,<br />
I've been really busy lately add color to lots of different surfaces in lots of different ways. I do so love surface design! Here are some pieces of dye painted batting that I did last week. They are painted with Dyenaflow and Lumiere by Jacquard. I love to use this painted batting instead of regular batting. I design right on it, collaging fabrics and other fibers right on the surface and leaving the edges of the batting exposed so that I don't have to add a binding.<br />
Below, are some pieces of Lutradur that I painted in the same manner. I like to melt it with a heat gun to lace it up and I love to make beads out of it.<br />
So much fun, so much exploration - never enough time!<br />
Till next time,<br />

Hi All,<br />
I taught a class last week in marbling on fabric with ink. I only had one student so I got to create along with her - we both had a ball! Here are the pieces that I did. They are each 15" x 20" and were painted using Tsukineko inks on shaving cream. I used black, white, and the metallic colors black orchid, copper, gold, silver and champagne mist.<br />
I will be cutting these lovlies up to make a modern styled art quilt. I think I'll add some stamped black birds to it too. I can't wait to see how it all comes out. I've found nothing more enjoyable than making art from the art cloth that I make! If you click on one of the images then you can see them larger in a slide show.<br />
Till next time,<br />
Heather<br />

Here are a few more pieces<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Afternoon All,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is my latest, almost finished piece. It just lacks some hand stitching and mounting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It began as a piece of silk fusion that I made using silk roving along with my own hand dyed silk cocoons, carrier rods and thread flotsam. I added in some vintage silk threads during the process and that is what you see moving through the diagonal middle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once the silk fusion was dry, I laid it on top of the red orange dyed jute which is on top of batting and a backing. I quilted the bajeebers out of all of the negative space on the fusion then did some basically invisible stippling on the red orange fabric. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The yellow circles are felt from the surplus store. I will hand stitch those down with some violet floss then I'll mount the whole thing on stretcher bars and trim the frayed edges a bit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>

These close ups show a bit more of the fabulous textures as well as the mix of color.<br />
It's been years since I've played much with Silk Fusion. I made more than a dozen pieces the other day. They are for sale in our gallery as well as on our new Etsy site:<br />

Hello All,<br />
I've been really busy in the studio lately making all sorts of fun and beautiful stuff. Here are a bunch of pieces of silk fusion, from simple to very complex, each one is very unique. One of the things that I like to do when making silk fusion is to make them so that each of their two sides are very different. One is simpler and the other more complex.<br />
I use a combination of hand dyed silk roving from Treenway Silks and hand dyed silk hankies and carrier rods that I dye myself. I also add silk sari fibers, silk waste, bits of threads from the dryer and lots of yummy, shiny Angelina fibers. I put mine together with thinned matte medium rather than fabric medium. It's cheaper and I've always got tons of it on hand.<br />
I'm almost finished with an art piece made by the third piece above. I'll show it to you once I've finished. The rest will be for sale in the gallery, on our web site and soon, on our new Etsy store.<br />

Hi All,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really do love trying something new. In fact, I love change, well, as long as it's change that I put into motion. This piece brings together several new things for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The lighter portion in the middle is a piece of paper that I made. It was done in a class with one of the instructors at my gallery/studio, Deb Determan. The paper is made from recycled copy paper. While it is wet on the screen various resists were laid down and color sprayed on. Once it was dry and taken off the screen, I put Misty Fuse on the backside of it and ironed it to a piece of fine whale corduroy that I had dyed. Then I inserted the large metal circles and quilted everything down using free motion on my machine. I used a mix of circles and straightish lines for the quilting in the negative space and simply followed lines that were present in the paper when stitching on it. Once all of the quilting was done I finished the edges with a satin stitch and matching rattail then I hand stitched down the medium and small sized metal circles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm pleased with the piece. I really like the way the paper looks as thought it is breaking apart, but mostly I like the way that the paper, fabric, metal and hand stitches are interacting with each other.</div>

Hi All,<br />
Here is the fabric that I've been working on for the last week, hanging in the gallery. These fabrics were all done with thickened Procion MX dyes. With the first, middle and last on light weight canvas and the remaining two on beautiful linen. Dyeing fabric is almost always a crap shoot. I did the two linen pieces first, both with the same mixed dyes. With the canvas pieces, I made the red (Pomegranate) more intense by adding more dye, but I over saturated it so it ran when I washed it, even with Synthrapol. So, I had lots of pale pink smudges all over the white background areas. To remedy that, I over dyed them with a very pale gold. Which yielded a very rich end result. I'm rather pleased with them. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmfJcwLxJpW9035mj5Ji-HRkrP6tEXSaRLSrKeYMDYH-XjEGVyaxRWVrVpWiKDm7epayYed8KZAJbVkr_Y_HumszvBf2jyZNYL-FIj9NtB7RTcI5BZIT8WQhnpzTIoE4guSfKeAgOR7iXl/s1600/IMG_5424+(1024x768).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmfJcwLxJpW9035mj5Ji-HRkrP6tEXSaRLSrKeYMDYH-XjEGVyaxRWVrVpWiKDm7epayYed8KZAJbVkr_Y_HumszvBf2jyZNYL-FIj9NtB7RTcI5BZIT8WQhnpzTIoE4guSfKeAgOR7iXl/s1600/IMG_5424+(1024x768).jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
These pieces are hanging on the other wall in the gallery. The two end pieces are 16mm Habotai silk and the center two pieces are Indian Dupioni silk. All of them were dyed with Jacquard Green label silk dyes. All were dyed with the fabrics laid flat on the ground. The piece on the far left was done using squirt bottles and sea salt. So was the second piece. The longer warm colored piece was done using spray bottles with no salt and the final piece, that you can barely see was done with squirt bottles and more salt.<br />
I simply love throwing color on things!<br />

<br />
Hi All,<br />
I spent 10 hours yesterday dye painting another 6 yards of fabric. Here are three of the coordinates that I've been working on. They are dye painted using Procion MX dyes thickened with Sodium Alginate. Painting fabric is one of the funnest things I've ever had the privilege to do. It makes me sort of high when I'm down in the studio mixing color, playing with texture and playing with paint brushes and found objects.<br />
If you're a local to Denver, all of these fabrics will be gracing the walls of my gallery/studio for the month of May.<br />
Till next time,<br />

Hi All,<br />
One of the best things about being an art/quilting instructor is that when my class has only one of two people in it, I get to play along. Last week I taught a gelatin mono-printing class that had very few students so, I got to paint while teaching. It was so much fun. Here are some of the pieces that I painted. The pink and violet pieces were done using a mix of Jacquard Lumiere, Neopaque and Textile paints and the blue/blue green ones on the bottom were done using Tsukineko inks thickened with Aloe Vera gel. All were made on a medium sized Gelli Plate using found objects to create texture. I had a blast!Heather Thomashttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01267059586926398872noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6021283387517994326.post-56830678061963809862014-04-25T18:09:00.002-07:002014-04-25T18:09:59.938-07:00New Explorations in Surface Design<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Hi All,<br />
I've been doing loads of surface design lately. Here is a new piece that began life as left over's from the last three sided vessel that I made. It is only about 12" x 7" or so. It has a layer of dark gold hand dye on the top that was heavily quilted with layers of wool batting, cotton batting, Timtex and another layer of hand dye. After all of the quilting was done, I added some luscious multicolored metal leaf to the quilted surface.<br />
I started the process by pouring up a bit of fabric glue on a paper plate. Next, I lightly wet a sea sponge and dried it off in a towel so that it was just moist. Then I saturated the flattest side of the sponge with the fabric glue and lightly sponged the glue across the surface of the quilted fabric so that the glue sat on the raised portions of the quilt and did not seep down into the stitched indentations of the quilting. I let the glue dry until it was just slightly tacky - about 5 minutes.<br />
I then carefully laid two of the small sheets (6" squares) of metal leaf on to the surface and very lightly and carefully pressed it into the surface. I left it to dry completely for about 1/2 hour then I placed it on top of a sheet of paper and grabbed a large, soft stencil brush. I lightly brushed across the surface of the quilt to dust off any of the metal leaf that was not attached, then brushed a little more vigorously to make sure all of the excess was off. Yes, I save all of the excess, metal leaf is a bit expensive and the bits and pieces are easy to re-use. I love this technique and the quilted fabric made a delightful little three sided vessel as shown below.<br />
Till next time,<br />

Hi All,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've been making vessels in one form or another for more than a decade. I love doing them because they are somewhat instant gratification. These three sided vessels are new for me and boy are they fun to make. With them I get to quilt fun stuff, cut it up and embellish it and put it back together again. I have a show here at the gallery in November of this year and I plan on having at least 40 quilted vessels for it, along with art for the walls too. So, I'll be showing you lots of previews here over the next several months. The blue vessel is two feet tall and the orange one is about 10". </div>

<br /></div>
Hi All,<br />
I haven't been posting on this blog much, I've got another one if you would like to check it out; wildheatherfiftyweeksofart.blogspot.com. I've been writing on it this year. It is a blog that I'm sharing with a bunch of other artists who are all trying to make a piece of art every week. <br />
<br />
This piece is not from that blog. It is a new experiment that I'm trying out. I'm calling it quilt sculpting. It's done on a some of my hand dyed silk/rayon velvet. Essentially what I'm doing is quilting the holy hell out of it in the negative space. Any area that looks sandy brown is thread. All of the colored areas are places where there is no stitch so the fabric blossoms up to the surface. I've used three layers of batting; two wool and one cotton, so that I can achieve this Trapunto like effect.<br />
<br />
I've dyed several larger pieces of velvet so that I can move on to bigger pieces. However, this little piece which is 11" x 16" took me almost 10 hours to stitch and about 1500 yards of thread!<br />
<br />
Talk to you again soon, I hope,<br />

Wednesday, Dec 18, 2013,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Morning,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My apologies once again for not keeping up here on the blog. I realized a few weeks ago that even though the year was not over, I was emotionally finished doing my daily art work. There are lots of reasons for feeling that way, but mostly it was a feeling of being overwhelmed by the rest of my creative/work/home life and being totally bored by the format of the daily pieces. I really just felt that I was going through the motions and not putting in enough effort to put out good work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But, I have been quite busy with other creative things. The photo above is of two Arashi Shibori silk velvet scarves. I've developed a technique to do these beauties in two simple steps with no processing in between. They are pure joy to make! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, over the next few weeks as we move into remodeling our store front, gallery & teaching space, I will upload some more of the dye work that I've been doing. It's really where I'm getting the most creative bang for my buck.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Please keep your eye out for more info about the show we're putting up in the gallery for the month of January, 2014. It will feature all of my daily pieces. They will be for sale beginning Jan 3, (our 1st Friday opening) here in the gallery and on line on my website.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till next time,</div>

<span style="color: black;">\Art For Several Day, Nov 16, 17 &18,</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">Good Evening,</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">Here is the piece I made on Saturday, Nov 16th and got so busy I forgot to put up! It features a stamped flower design with really cool wavy lines surrounding the flower all in a dull black on white fabric. I placed it on top of some really bold dye painted fabric that is filled with color and movement.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">I quilted the flower lightly inside the petals with red thread and heavily around the outside edge with the same thread then added a think line of yellow quilting in the center. The background around the flower is stitched with blue green in the white lines. The white border around the flower is quilted with wavy yellow lines. The colorful background fabric is quilted in a pale yellow which surrounds the shapes and moves throughout the negative, white space.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">I sort of like the piece, but the quilting looks rushed and I wish I had taken more care when doing it.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJz285gyu1oThWmDOZUzN-ZDsLmn78A0xQUmhyphenhyphenYIFPTSdf8bA-uPT7oRiD49rCIRyrfDwk-aX5p-Gd98Ul9qKHap104_CDQFps8gIDRrsV-eWQnGlmIwFDfZlDXvIQ1JQwy-mgbGxSZdgf/s1600/11.17.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJz285gyu1oThWmDOZUzN-ZDsLmn78A0xQUmhyphenhyphenYIFPTSdf8bA-uPT7oRiD49rCIRyrfDwk-aX5p-Gd98Ul9qKHap104_CDQFps8gIDRrsV-eWQnGlmIwFDfZlDXvIQ1JQwy-mgbGxSZdgf/s400/11.17.13.jpg" width="318" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece was done this morning as was the next piece. It features a piece of silk that I mono-printed on glass plate using Silks acrylic glaze and Jacquard screen printing ink. It is the ghost print from the original print used in the piece below. I used a piece of plastic from a paper plate holder that one of the studio students, Rochelle, brought in for me as well as a comb. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I cut the fabric into several pieces and added them to a piece of blue green/yellow green silk noil. I heavily quilted the noil with three, fancy feathers. Then I quilted the hell out of all of the white negative space around the portions of blue wheels. I kept the stitching about 1/8" apart to really push back the white and bring the wheels out which worked great. The grid portion in the lower left is quilted following the light lines.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece is way better looking in person. It's rather abstract and funky and I like it a lot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhORLnmzF4Rtxdr1h4X5l5K3szXFDzRFWY85nPrNkk1yGTbzG1-Llm8Hx4DoRaw-Mn4UrQGsDXrBnKd4NetRvBalIo7cLsh0E3fuKwefacSoYXnIflxcPUaaD4DfGi_MbVk11dTp-zmK0A3/s1600/11.18.13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhORLnmzF4Rtxdr1h4X5l5K3szXFDzRFWY85nPrNkk1yGTbzG1-Llm8Hx4DoRaw-Mn4UrQGsDXrBnKd4NetRvBalIo7cLsh0E3fuKwefacSoYXnIflxcPUaaD4DfGi_MbVk11dTp-zmK0A3/s400/11.18.13.jpg" width="316" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This piece is the original two layers of print from the glass plate. It too is on silk. I printed the light green portion first, painting a layer of green Silks acrylic glaze on the plate then pulling off some of the paint using a hand carved feather stamp. Next, I painted the plate with a sparkly, dark blue green Jacquard silk screening ink and ran a comb through it several times. Then I laid the spokey wheel down on the plate, laid down the fabric and pulled the print.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like both the color combo and the imagery combo. The movement of the combed lines really help to support the bold wheel. I quilted the negative space between the spokes of the wheel about every 1/16" then quilted all of the negative space about every 1/4" in all of the light lines made by the comb.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like this piece. It's <span style="color: black;">simple and straight forward yet interesting and such a luscious mix of colors. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="color: black;">Well, hopefully I'll get another piece or two pumped out tomorrow. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Afternoon Again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another new piece. I really enjoyed working with this big ass flower. Here, I made the flower with solid black as the petals and white as the center and I laid it down on a busy dye painted background that features bold red, blue green and yellow on a white field. The batting is green which is a color that is not in the multicolored print so it makes a nice contrasting edge. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept the quilting in the flower rather simple but did it in a contrasting red thread. Then I inlined the blue green swirls in the background with matching thread, stitched a tiny stipple in the red portions of the background then finished it off with loop d'loops in the yellow/white areas. All in all, I really like it. It feels so much different from the black and white flower from earlier today and I'm amazed how well the bold black flower is holding up against the very busy, brightly colored background.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hi Again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another piece that I did several days ago but didn't find the time to write up. It's a weird one, a failure you might say. I had this nice piece of discharged hand dye that I used in the background. with the wavy lines moving across the diagonal. I then added a large triangle of embroidered cotton in a yellow orange that repeated the color of the batting. I topped that triangle with a portion of the background fabric that has the wavy lines moving in the opposite diagonal to how the lines are set in the background. It was my home that off setting the wavy lines would look cool. But alas, it is not working very well. I think the problem is that I don't have enough of the yellow orange fabric around three of the sides of the top most wavy line fabric. If I had more of the yellow orange it would isolate the fabric more which would make it contrast better with it's self in the negative space. Live and learn!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I do like how the tiny stippling in the red violet allows all of the dirty white lines to show up really well. At least that portion was a success.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till next time,</div>

Art Every Day, Friday November 15, 2013,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Afternoon,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another new piece. With it I wanted to play with the strong contrast of light & dark by using black and white. I added a deep yellow for the accent, using it as the flower center and batting. I began with two pieces of white fabrics that I had been stamped with black designs. I used the print that was mostly white in the larger left side background area and the print that was mostly black in the smaller right side background area. Then I layered up some solid white and solid black and cut all six flower petals at the same time. I then cut the flower center and set it where I wanted it and surrounded it with the petals, using the black petals on the whiter background and the white petals on the blacker background.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I then quilted the flower using a deep yellow thread. After it was stitched then I heavily quilted the white background with a small stipple and the black background following the black lines in the wavy grid.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like the piece well enough. It was fun to do a little applique even if it was really simple. What I like the most is the optical illusion of how much larger the white petals seem even though they are the exact same size as the black petals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What fun it is to control color and value!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Till next time,</div>

Art Every Day, Thursday, Nov 14, 2013<br />
Good Afternoon,<br />
Here is today's new work. It began with a piece of dye painted fabric that features faded tones of yellow, red, orange and dark gray. I laid it on top of red dye painted batting then quilted it heavily. I quilted big Black Eyed Susan like flowers using the dark gray circles in the background as the centers of the flowers.<br />
Then, I laid out the four pieces of heavy canvas that I had dyed with a dark gray dye. I left all the 'hairy' bits for added texture. The gray strips are quilted with a pale yellow wavy line and straight lines and circles in a dusty red colored thread.<br />
The canvas is so heavy that my camera wants to focus on it and push the other two layers; background and batting, into far negative space making it difficult to see the more decorative quilting there. <br />
As with yesterday's piece, I like this one quite a bit, mostly because of the high contrast. It was a lot of fun to quilt too.<br />

Good Evening,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is my latest piece. It began with a piece of fabric that was dyed using the deconstructed silk screening technique. Once I ripped it to size I then stamped it with one of my bird stamps using bold, black paint. I love the juxtaposition of the three birds and the high contrast of black on white with the cool greens and blues showing through in the background.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I kept the quilting simple, outlining and inlining the birds, quilting the grid design in the upper with straight lines and stippling around and between all of the colored bits in the lower right. I really, really like the piece. It's simple yet complicated, mod with a vintage feel and bold but not in your face, everything I look for in a piece of art.</div>

Good Evening,<br />
Finally here is a new piece. After weeks of an overwhelming schedule, I feel like I can breath and create again. This piece started with a piece of hand painted fabric. The fabric is painted with "Silks" acrylic glazes and is done mostly free form with brush work along with using some found objects as resists a black fabric marker and a gold fabric marker. I love all of the bold lines made with the gold pen and the play of the blue fan shapes in each of the different design areas. I recently cut a rubber stamp shaped like one of the jacks we used to play with when we were kids. I love that shape so much that I used it here with the black pen. I find the whole piece very playful and quilted it to match, with lines separating out the squares in the checkerboard area, stipples between all of the gold lines in the large area on the lower left, and outlining of the blue fan blades and gold wisps in the top most area. All of the quilting was done using a medium valued tone of blue which meshes quite well with all of the paint colors.<br />
The piece is full of movement and joy and I quite like it.<br />
Till tomorrow, I hope,<br />

Good Afternoon Again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another catch up piece made from more discharged fabrics from last weeks retreat. I had two light blue/violet fabrics, one with a floral discharge design which I silk screened on with one of my stencils and the other with triangles all over it discharged with a hand cut stamp. I layered up the floral strip with a deep violet silk noil on top of a light violet silk gauze. I laid that trio down on the triangle print which was sitting on top of a violet dye painted batting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I simply outlined the floral print and top stitched around the edges of the fabric it was laying on. Then I stitched around all of the triangles and stitched angled lines between them to push back the background. I like the soft, subtle tones of this piece as well as it's depth.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Afternoon,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is today's new piece. It is made from a fabric that I discharged while on retreat last week. I added a couple of narrow strips of black linen as well as some black batting to the discharged piece and chose a very, very simple layout so as to really show of the flower and the fancy grid printed in the fabric.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I quilted everything with matching red violet thread beginning with the black strip on the left which is stitched with an 1/8" grid. Then I outlined the flower and added some stitching inside it following the lines in the petals. The background is a mix of stippling and outlining and inlining the grid design. I then couched on a narrow black strip for the flower center.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When all of the stitching was complete I added a bunch of iron on crystals to the black strip and the flower center to give them both a punch of interest. The piece has a subtle beauty along with some funk. I like that.</div>

Till later,</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Good Evening Yet Again,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is another piece made with some of the fabric that I made at the Taos retreat. The background fabric was dispersed dyed using Decolourant Plus in a pale gray, dark red violet and yellow orange. The gray is printed using a hand cut stamp. The orange was done with the end of a sponge and the red violet was sprayed on with a mister. I chose a medium gray cotton, a dark red violet cotton and a yellow orange/orange silk noil. It's all set on top of some black batting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm sorry that the quilting isn't showing better, but it's great. The dark red violet strip is stitched with circles. The orange is stitched with straight lines moving in a swirl to the center of the shapes with the lines about 1/2" apart. The gray is stitched heavily with a tiny stipple and the background is stitched with an all over interlaced triangular design that surrounds the orange rectangles to show them off. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The piece has great depth due to the density of the quilting in each of the physical layers. I love this color way with the red violet and orange along with gray. It's a bit retro yet ultra mod at the same time.</div>
