Living This Creative Life

I have two favorite quotes. The first one is by Emile Zola, "If you asked me what I came into this world to do, I would tell you that I came to live out loud". I don't know who the second one is by, but it goes like this, "If you're not living on the edge then you might as well jump". Both of these sentiments sum up my personal philosophy of this experience we call life on earth. Enjoy!

Art Every Day, Tuesday, January 29th, 2013

Good Morning,

Here is today's new piece.  I'm still playing around with that delicious cheesecloth and rayon ribbon. I think I may have overdone it with this piece.  The swath of color is so large in comparison to the size of the background that it dwarfs it.  Scale is so important especially when working really small or really large.
My intent was to really invite the color in to the black background but now looking at it as a photograph I see that I could have made each strip of color about half the width and made sure that all of the colors together did not take up more than one third of the design field rather than half of the field which is what I did.  Basically, I didn't leave enough background to support the foreground.
I do however, like the quilting in the negative space and how it tries to support, through repetition, the focal point.  Ah, I love to learn!
Till tomorrow,
Heather

I appreciate your commentary on each piece you do, Heather, because having so much less experience than you means I don't always see for myself WHY something works or doesn't work.

It's funny you said you noticed the scale more in the photo later- I actually started to take photos and look at them during color class. I found it helps me see things from a different perspective, and often I was able to see better what it still needed or what needed to come off. You know in MY case, it was always what needed to come off, and I still didn't manage to get it right most of the time. lol

This background is great, and the texture and colors of the cheesecloth and ribbons are just yummy! The color combination against the black so appeals to me and so that tends to blind me to the overall balance and story of the piece. Guess that is why I am still learning.

No matter what- it reads "HAPPY!" to me :)
