Living This Creative Life

I have two favorite quotes. The first one is by Emile Zola, "If you asked me what I came into this world to do, I would tell you that I came to live out loud". I don't know who the second one is by, but it goes like this, "If you're not living on the edge then you might as well jump". Both of these sentiments sum up my personal philosophy of this experience we call life on earth. Enjoy!

Art Every Day, Tuesday, July 2, 2013

Good Morning,
Here is today's new piece.  I wanted to pair the large block print with a bit of hand painted fabric that I had left over and decided that black, white and red solid fabrics would show them both off the best.  I layered white on top of red dye painted batting.  Topped it with a rectangle of black linen which I topped with the block print.  Then I ripped some red strips, a large one to hold the strip of painted fabric and a small one to tuck under the edges of the block print.  I positioned the red so as to spread it around and to isolate the painted strip from the block print.
The white background is stitched in white in alternating segments of wavy lines and the block print is stitched in the white areas only.  The red and the painted strip are top stitched in black.  My favorite parts are the two areas of white below and above the short red strips with the black stitched swirls. The stitched swirls add a bit of humor to an otherwise bold, strident color way and design.  All in all, the piece has nice depth and makes a bold, pleasing statement.

Till tomorrow,
Heather

This has the feel of clean and simple yet it is very complex.

I think it looks so elegant and crisp not only because of its palette, but because of the repetition of the elements. They are not exact repetitions, but close enough to keep things tight.

The stamped piece has vertical and horizontal elements, and so does the quilting in the white, the hand painted lines, and the layout of the piece.

The hand painted piece has brush strokes that echo the frayed edges of the stamped piece and the white. Or vice versa. lol

The swirls of course are repeated over the red rectangles from inside the stamped piece, nicely drawing our eye out.

This has great depth and is able to play a few eye tricks, which I always enjoy. For instance, the black parts of the hand painted bar seem further back than the top layer, they almost look like holes in the fabric.

The swirls and the wavy quilting provide some nice gentle movement within the piece and add to the elegance.

The tiny splash of yellow green is a great little surprise when you get up close!
