Living This Creative Life

I have two favorite quotes. The first one is by Emile Zola, "If you asked me what I came into this world to do, I would tell you that I came to live out loud". I don't know who the second one is by, but it goes like this, "If you're not living on the edge then you might as well jump". Both of these sentiments sum up my personal philosophy of this experience we call life on earth. Enjoy!

Art Every Day

Art Every Day, Friday, July 5, 2013

Good Morning,
Here is today's new piece. I started with a light blue green dye painted batting.  I layered it with a large piece of bright blue then topped it with a large square set on point and a strip of light blue, coarse, heavy linen.  I topped the linen with squares and strips of a painted fabric in bright yellows and other softer colors.  The background is stitched in circles and simple paisleys and everything else is top stitched or echoed.
Because of the bold yellow, I tried to keep the piece as simple as possible.  I like it to a degree.  It's well balanced but too structured/traditional for me.  My hope was that the mottled, painted fabric with it's bold color would add enough interest, but now the longer I look at it the more I realize that I should have raised the strip across the bottom just enough so that I could see the bright blue fabric along the bottom.   Any way, I do love the fringe made by the torn linen.  It adds such lovely texture.

Till tomorrow,
Heather

This does have far more traditional leanings than your usual offerings, but fear not Miss Heather- no traditionalist has your vim and vigor and punch; your hand painted fabrics put your very definite mark on it :)

What I love best about this piece is its luminosity. I just adore the way the light comes through all over in this.

It comes through in the painted batting, in the blue background (which the quilting really accentuates), in the gorgeous fringes of the lighter blue linen pieces, and throughout the painted pieces in bits here and there. When I look at this from further back- the light is what really grabs me first.

Of course, closer up, the detail is really pretty. The background stitching is full enough to keep the blue back, and also to add a lot of depth and movement to that area.

The fringes of course add great texture and simulate some gentle movement as well, and the painted pieces have a lovely harmony of colors and visual textures to look at and enjoy.

Might be structured, but it certainly is a lot of fun!
